User Icons in Mac OS X

| | Comments (4)

Alex did a great deal of probing and found that the user icons supports standard TIFF files, including transparent alpha channels. Despite Apple using some other variant of the TIFF standard in the images they supply. The login panel does not cope well with scaling the images, so it's a good idea to re-size any images that you wish to use. The image size is 60 pixels wide and 56 pixels high.

Transparent regions of the user icons show the Aqua strip through them at the password prompt.

If alpha channel transparency seems like too much trouble, the login panel also accepts PNG (and possible most other image formats, but I would recommend using formats that support transparency).
